Ardbeg Distillery

Ardbeg Distillery, located on the Kildalton coast of Islay, Scotland, is renowned for producing some of the smokiest, most intensely peated single malt whiskies, typically registering at 50ppm (parts per million). Established in 1815, this historic distillery, now owned by LVMH, uses water from Loch Uigeadail and operates with a unique, small, two-still setup.

Foundation & History: While officially established in 1815 by John MacDougall, illegal distillation likely occurred on the site as early as 1794. The distillery faced closure in 1981 and was mothballed, with only sporadic production until being purchased by Glenmorangie Plc in 1997.
Location & Water Source: Located on the rocky southern coast of Islay, the distillery uses soft, peaty water sourced from Loch Uigeadail.
Production & Style: Ardbeg is known for producing the most phenolic (smoky) malt in the industry. It is characterized by intense peat smoke balanced with sweetness, often using bourbon casks for maturation.
Equipment: The distillery is known for its rare and very old Boby malt mill, installed in 1921.
Ownership: The distillery is currently owned by Moët Hennessy (LVMH), which took control in 2004.
The Committee: The "Ardbeg Committee" was formed in 2005, a worldwide group of fans dedicated to ensuring the distillery never closes again.
Accolades: Ardbeg has won numerous prestigious awards, including being named World Whisky of the Year multiple times.
